What pets do to floors
Claws scratch finishes, accidents and water bowls introduce moisture, and running dogs need traction. The best floor for your home depends on which of these matter most.
Comparing options
- Luxury vinyl plank: waterproof, scratch-resistant wear layer, quieter underfoot
- Laminate: hard, scratch-resistant surface; choose water-resistant products and avoid wet rooms
- Engineered or solid hardwood: real wood can scratch, but matte and wire-brushed finishes hide wear and can be refinished later
If you choose hardwood
Harder species and textured surfaces show less wear. Matte or satin sheens hide scratches better than gloss. Mid-tone colors hide dust and hair better than very dark or very light floors. Keep nails trimmed, wipe up accidents quickly, and plan on a recoat when traffic lanes start to dull.
Traction and comfort
Older dogs can struggle on slick surfaces. Textured finishes and runners in hallways and on stairs help. LVP and textured wood both offer better grip than high-gloss finishes.
Common questions
- What flooring is best for pets?
- Waterproof luxury vinyl plank first, high-abrasion-rated laminate second. For real wood, wire-brushed engineered hardwood with a matte finish hides claw marks best.
- Will dogs ruin hardwood floors?
- Dogs will leave some surface scratches on any wood floor, but matte finishes hide them well and the floor can be refinished later.
- Is LVP good for dogs?
- Yes. It is waterproof and has a scratch-resistant wear layer, making it one of the most pet-friendly floors.
